The Illusion of Freedom
The Illusion of Freedom is an original music experiment by the renowned Serbian artist Jasna Jovićević, premiered at the Pocket Globe Festival in November 2023 on the occasion of receiving the “Vojin Draškoci” award for her artistic work in the field of contemporary jazz and world music.
Jasna in this exploration has a need to transcend the boundaries of body, mind, and emotions, although this quest for transcendence is paradoxical, as it takes place within the context of tangible limitations, such as the nature of instruments, knowledge, genre conventions, relationships, expectations, etc. The performance is conceived as a navigation of the complex interrelationship between limitations and the aspiration for freedom. The artist explores self-liberation within the context of artistic self-examination. Shee sees the abstraction of life on one side, and the freedom without human body (death) on the other side, as the possible paths for freedom exploration.
