Imago Sonus
The dance performance by the Theatre Troupe “Summer Cinema Theatre Association” (Nyári Mozi Színházi Közösség) is tentatively titled “Imago Sonus” and is based on a synthesis of dance, visual arts, and music. The final form and refinement of the performance were preceded by several preparatory years. Under the title “Fantasies in Images,” workshops were held with renowned visual artists, musicians, dancers, and actors, as well as other performers interested in this theme, including art historians, writers, poets, and performers.

The primary theme of the performance is continuity, emphasizing the power of expressing a story that unfolds in the moment, the formation of an image, the formation of an image of the past, anecdotes, pre-conceived choreographies based on true events, as well as movements and dances that result from immediate inspiration, all accompanied by musical improvisation performed by Subotica composer and musician Jasna Jovićević.
In each performance, a new, original painting is introduced into the set design. For this work, we invite visual artists to create a 280x350cm painting a few days before each performance. The painting is created in the presence of dancers Deneš Debrei and Heni Varga. The dancers follow the movements of the painter’s hands, which then become an organic part of the choreography. The visual artwork plays a significant role in our performance, as it appears as a new element in each show, creating new dances. The painting process involves the artist sketching their work on foil, with indentations similar to corridors on both sides where specific colors are poured in certain places, and then covered with a white canvas. During the dance, the color appears under the dancers’ feet on the stretched canvas, gradually revealing the image created by the visual artist.
Before our eyes, a fragment of traveled paths and life journeys is drawn. During each new performance, new paths are crossed, and new images are born. At first glance, they appear as incomprehensible colored stains on the white canvas, incomprehensible connections of events in the presence of the performers, who then uncover new thoughts and feelings in the emotions and imagination of the audience. The performance begins to communicate with the audience, creating a dialogue. Our past watches us; we were what we have become, we will become what we are.
This contemporary work encompasses a series of performances in a specific theater space with a framework story based on the early nineties, reflecting on earlier periods to create the present moment. The work created in the present demands to exist in the future, emerging from the real moment of theater reality as the artistic work created during the performance through dance becomes a valuable painting exhibited in galleries.
For the last 10 years, Jasna has been collaborating with dancers, poets and painters in various collaborative, multidisciplinary works, in USA and Europe.
The newest collaboration is Imago Sonus.
